4

Drive positive change

STEP 3

Key Pillars of Responsibility

Responsibility as a startup has three dimensions: responsibility towards your customers, towards your employees and towards society as a whole. The Responsible Technology Assessment approaches these dimensions through six key pillars:

Business Ethics

Company values, gender diversity and racial diversity.
You will reflect on your startup’s values, whether employees understand them and if customers even know they exist.

Socio-Cultural Understanding

Consumer demographics, language and inclusivity.
Understanding social factors and cultural contexts is crucial in order to build and offer products and services that speak to as many customers as possible.

Technology Design

Data collection, algorithmic bias and transparency, UI/UX design and privacy
All technology has inherent risks. It is important to become aware of these risks and become proactive about minimising them for the sake of your stakeholders.

Health Risks

Addiction, anxiety and depression
As technology is highly personalised and can affect all aspects of a users’ personal lives, risks that are associated with technology can’t be taken too lightly, as they can have severe implications for mental health.

Democratic Risks

Social and political activism, misinformation and disinformation
As digital technology transforms the workings of democracy in profound ways, it is important to be aware of this power balance between individual citizens and the main socio-political institutions, political parties in particular.

Social Risks

Anti-social behaviour, bad actors and hijacking
Tech startups have to do their best to safeguard users from online abuse, as people’s wellbeing as well as trust and confidence in the platform could seriously suffer.

“Responsible technology is a very important topic and something creators should be more aware of - including me, to be honest. There is always room for improvement.”
