ASTERRA
With a radar “eye-print” of more than 1,300 sq miles (3,500 sq km), ASTERRA uses algorithms patented by Utilis to analyze images sent from a satellite deploying ground-penetrating synthetic aperture radar. ASTERRA can locate and assess underground moisture around critical infrastructure for most of the world’s largest cities in a single glance.
ASTERRA's Story
ASTERRA offers an innovative technology to fight against critical challenges such as water scarcity, building resilient infrastructure, and reducing hazardous effects of climate change. Using microwave imaging from a satellite (specifically L-band synthetic aperture radar), ASTERRA identifies critical sub-surface water near infrastructure such as water and sewer pipes, roadways and railways, dams and embankments to help assess failure risk, mitigate issues before they happen, and reduce water loss or contamination.
ASTERRA contributes towards three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), specifically 6, 9, 13. Sustainability is part of our strategy as it guides us in our day-to-day decisions.
Goal 6: Ensure access to water and sanitation for all.
ASTERRA helps build resiliency to ensure continuous water supply by proactively monitoring water and wastewater systems for leaks before they are visible.
Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation.
ASTERRA monitors saturated ground on slopes to reduce the risk of landslides to keep transportation infrastructure open and operating in all weather conditions
Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
Climate change is projected to increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as heat waves, droughts, and floods.
ASTERRA helps identify and locate vulnerabilities on critical infrastructure and helps make them more resilient to severe weather.
