Hello Lamp Post's Story
“In today’s urban world, cities are developing and evolving at a rapid rate and it is believed that by 2050 more than 68% of the world’s population will live in cities. With that in mind, Hello Lamp Post’s vision is to humanise urban environments to help create places of the future – they want to make cities smart, not smart cities.
Through their observations, Hello Lamp Post has recognized two fundamental problems with city development plans and our society. Firstly, as urbanisation increases, the voices of citizens are often unheard or neglected, when decisions are made. Secondly, local decision-makers are faced with the challenge of properly understanding their wide and varied audiences.
Hello Lamp Post was therefore initially launched to solve these challenges – by bringing familiar street objects to life, they would be able to provide cities with the support they needed, to effectively and efficiently engage with their citizens. What they discovered was that by encouraging people to anonymously interact with their playful, digital platform, they were able to increase participation and engagement by 40%, in comparison to traditional methods of communication. As well as gather insights, that had been previously inaccessible.
Hello Lamp Post is now the first-ever on-street engagement platform that can facilitate active conversations between humans and street objects. Innovative and completely unique, their tool’s simplicity, ease of use and core values means that their approach can successfully enable transparent city-citizen dialogues with all demographics. The friendly tone encourages conversations, the low barrier to entry means that anyone with a standard mobile phone can chat with their objects and the accessibility appeals to the masses – even audiences like millennials and Gen-Z, who have been out-of-touch and difficult to target in the past.
