I was born and grew up in Cameroon (Central Africa). Two years ago, I experienced very stressful healthcare situation in my family in Cameroon. My brother spent 2 weeks at home with a severe meningitis because of lack of money for health. His wife contacted us when his health status was deteriorating to share the situation. The family urgently sent him about 500 dollars to go to hospital. The overall cost of care was 350 Dollars. I started thinking how can someone put his life at risk for 350 Dollars, while he spends more than 4000 $/year? Furthermore, the family gave 500 $ for health and the overall cost was 350$, what if the remaining 150$ can be stored somewhere so that next time he will be sick, he already has the money to quickly access healthcare? After, I started to evaluate how can we leverage the boom of tech in Africa to empower people in Africa to save and have access to healthcare early when they need.
